Types of Tissue Culture Labs: From a Single Room to a Production Campus

Types of Tissue Culture Labs: From a Single Room to a Production Campus

Choosing the right type of tissue culture lab is the decision that shapes everything after it: budget, staffing, clearances and how fast you can start. This guide compares the six lab types we design, so you can place your own project before you spend on equipment.

1. Single-room lab

A converted room of roughly 150 to 400 sq ft with one laminar flow cabinet, a compact autoclave, lit growth shelves and a media corner. It is the lowest-cost way to start real culture work and the best place to prove a protocol before scaling. Output is limited, so it suits training, trials and small batches.

2. Container or modular lab

A factory-fitted insulated container (typically 20 or 40 ft) divided into media, transfer and growth zones, with air conditioning and electrical work done before delivery. It is relocatable, can be expanded by adding units, and suits leased land, remote farms and fast starts.

3. Small commercial lab

About 1,000 to 3,000 sq ft with separate wash, media, transfer and culture rooms arranged for one-way flow, plus a hardening area and written SOPs. This is the usual first commercial step for nurseries and agri-entrepreneurs working with one or two crops.

4. Commercial production lab

Several transfer stations, large controlled growth rooms, positive-pressure air handling, batch traceability and greenhouse hardening capacity. It supports multi-crop production at the scale of lakhs of plantlets a month.

5. Mass-production or industrial lab

A zoned campus with automated media dispensing and washing, optional bioreactor or temporary-immersion systems, in-house indexing and quality labs, utility redundancy and large hardening areas. It is designed for audit and certification from the first drawing.

6. Research and specialty lab

Tissue culture combined with virus indexing, molecular and analytical support and germplasm storage, documented to the standard that grants and publications need.

How to choose

  • Start from the crop and volume. A banana programme and an orchid programme need very different space and subculture capacity.
  • Phase the build. Design the first stage with the utilities and layout of the full build so you can expand without rework.
  • Count the people. A lab is only as good as its trained technicians and supervisors.
  • Plan the paperwork early. Registrations, quality systems and any recognition you want should shape the design, not follow it.
