Description
🧫 Schenk & Hildebrandt (SH) Medium — a high-calcium, low-ammonium formulation (1972) suited for monocot cell suspension, sorghum, and some woody species.
| 📦 Format | Powder → 1 L | 🔬 Grade | TC / Tissue Culture |
| ⚗️ Working pH | 5.8–6.0 | 🌡️ Storage | 2–8 °C, sealed |
💡 What makes SH distinct
SH contains no ammonium (uses KNO₃ and Ca(NO₃)₂ as sole nitrogen sources) and higher calcium. This makes it tolerant of high auxin concentrations without the browning and media acidification seen with ammonium-containing media. Particularly effective for sorghum, wheat, and monocot suspensions.
🌱 Best for
- ✅ Sorghum & millet callus and suspension culture
- ✅ Some gymnosperm embryogenic cultures
- ✅ Species where MS ammonium causes browning
- ✅ Monocot cell suspensions where B5 underperforms
