Description
π¬ White’s Basal Medium β one of the oldest defined plant tissue culture media, formulated by Philip White in 1943 for excised tomato root culture; still used for root organ culture and some monocot work.
| π¦ Format | Powder β 1 L | π¬ Grade | TC / Tissue Culture |
| βοΈ Working pH | 5.5β6.0 | π‘οΈ Storage | 2β8 Β°C, sealed |
π‘ Historical and current use
White’s medium is very low in salts β lower than WPM β and was designed for the nutrient requirements of isolated roots rather than shoot-forming callus. It remains useful for root organ culture, secondary metabolite production in root cultures, and hairy root culture where MS salt levels are inhibitory.
π± Applications
- β Excised root culture (tomato, carrot)
- β Hairy root culture for alkaloid / terpenoid production
- β Some conifer embryogenic cultures
- β Root physiology experiments requiring low mineral background
