Description

πŸ”¬ White’s Basal Medium β€” one of the oldest defined plant tissue culture media, formulated by Philip White in 1943 for excised tomato root culture; still used for root organ culture and some monocot work.

βš—οΈ Working pH 5.5–6.0 🌑️ Storage 2–8 Β°C, sealed

πŸ’‘ Historical and current use

White’s medium is very low in salts β€” lower than WPM β€” and was designed for the nutrient requirements of isolated roots rather than shoot-forming callus. It remains useful for root organ culture, secondary metabolite production in root cultures, and hairy root culture where MS salt levels are inhibitory.

🌱 Applications

  • βœ… Excised root culture (tomato, carrot)
  • βœ… Hairy root culture for alkaloid / terpenoid production
  • βœ… Some conifer embryogenic cultures
  • βœ… Root physiology experiments requiring low mineral background
