💡 Pollen culture — why it matters
Microspores (pollen grains) can be reprogrammed from the gametophytic developmental pathway to sporophytic development — producing doubled haploid plants after chromosome doubling. This bypasses years of inbreeding in plant breeding programmes. Nitsch & Nitsch medium, combined with thermal cold-shock or starvation treatment, is the benchmark for tobacco and some Brassica microspore culture.
