Description
⚗️ Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) 37% — used to adjust medium pH downward, dissolve some plant growth regulators (kinetin, some auxins), and in general laboratory analytical work.
| 🧪 CAS | 7647-01-0 | ⚖️ Form | 37% w/v fuming liquid |
| 🔬 Grade | TC / Laboratory | 🌡️ Storage | Ventilated acid cabinet |
⚗️ TC Lab uses
| Use | Concentration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Medium pH adjustment (acidify) | 1M HCl, dropwise | Add before autoclaving; re-check pH |
| Kinetin stock prep | Few drops 1M HCl to dissolve | Then dilute to water |
| Cleaning glassware (acid wash) | Dilute HCl 5–10% | Before final sterile rinse |
| Calibrating pH meter (buffer prep) | Analytical grade | Standard procedure |
⚠️ Never mix HCl with NaOCl (bleach) — produces toxic Cl₂ gas. Use fuming HCl in a fume hood only. For pH adjustment of TC medium, use 1M HCl (dilute) not concentrated — add dropwise with stirring.
💡 For everyday pH adjustment of TC media, prepare a 1M HCl solution: add 8.3 mL of 37% HCl to 91.7 mL distilled water (always add acid to water, not water to acid).
