Description
πΏ Hoagland’s No. 2 Basal Salt Mixture β a classic hydroponic nutrient solution (Hoagland & Arnon, 1950) used in nutrient uptake research, hydroponics, and as a plant nutrition reference medium.

π‘ Hoagland’s in TC context
Unlike MS, Hoagland’s is a complete hydroponic nutrient solution not specifically optimised for TC. It sees use in TC for: nutrient stress studies, root physiology experiments, transferring in-vitro plants to ex-vitro hydroponic systems, and as a reference standard in mineral nutrition experiments.
πΏ Key differences from MS
- πΈ Lower ammonium (uses nitrate as primary N source)
- πΈ No organic components (no inositol, vitamins)
- πΈ Higher iron in some formulations (chelated Fe)
- πΈ Variable potassium depending on version
π‘ Dilute to ΒΌβΒ½ strength for deflasked plantlets transitioning from in-vitro to hydroponic culture β full strength can cause osmotic stress on delicate in-vitro roots.
